About Us

We are a small and friendly Target Archery Club based in Wellington, Somerset.  We welcome archers of all levels from absolute beginners, for whom we run beginners’ courses, to the more experienced archer.  Beginners can find more information about archery at Wellington by visiting the beginners page.

Wellington Bowmen was formed by Rachel Fenwick and John & Julie Morton in October 2001. Rachel was an Olympic Archer, shooting in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and was keen to develop the sport in her local area. In October ’02 we received a grant from the ‘Awards for All’ that enabled us to buy equipment and start the Wellington Bowmen Club. The club then quickly gained some new members which showed us that there was good support for archery in Wellington.

The Wellington Rugby Club was then approached, and it was agreed that they would host the Archery Club. The Rugby Club is still used for indoor shooting today, held every Tuesday night during the Winter.

In 2003 – and with the club continuing to expand – a larger shooting area was required. Court Fields Community School was approached to see if some arrangement could be made over the use of their sports field. After some negotiations it was agreed that the club could use the school’s facilities to promote archery.

Today you can see the club members shooting in the field of Court Fields every Sunday afternoon, as well as every Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the summer, weather permitting!
